Tourism Alliance Victoria is hosting the 2008 Victorian Adventure and Nature-Based Tourism Forum in Beechworth on July 29 and 30. "The forum will tackle some of the many issues operators are faced with in order to survive and prosper in today's challenging environment," says Tourism Alliance chief executive Anthony McIntosh. Ian Johnstone, who established Tasmania's Maria Island Walk (pictured), will be a keynote speaker along with Fred Ariel from Raging Thunder in Queensland. For details see tourismalliance.com.au.

Networking hates acronyms but because it's a mouthful, we'll excuse the folk who are promoting the ICT careers night on July 31 for expecting that everyone knows ICT stands for information and communications technology.

The event is being organised by the Victorian branch of the Australian Computer Society's Young IT Group and is open to all school-leavers and ICT graduates or young IT workers.

Registration for the free information evening, at the Telstra Theatrette in Exhibition Street, in the city, can be made at acs.org.au/vic.

July 31 is also the closing date for the Qantas-sponsored SOYA grants (yes, more acronyms) - the Spirit of Youth Awards grants program - aimed at emerging young fashion designers, musicians, artists, designers and filmmakers. There are seven categories and winners will receive mentorships with industry leaders including Elizabeth Ann Macgregor, director of Sydney's Museum of Contemporary Art, fashion designer Peter Morrissey, music producer Scott Horscroft, photographer Stephen Dupont and industrial design guru Marc Newson. Last year judges had the tough task of sifting through 4600 entries and this time around it may be even harder: the age limit has been lifted from 25 to 30. Entrants must create a profile and submit work in one or more of the seven categories to soya.com.au and provide at least three examples of their best original work with descriptions. -- GLEN JAMES
